I hear ya! I definitely think it's a muscle that you build over time. I used to force myself to finish every book, but I finally realized that the list of books I want to read is so long that I'll never finish them all in my lifetime 😂 so why waste time on a book that's not for me?
Agreed! In your post you mentioned ways to keep track of books you want to read. I use Amazon wish list since I read most of my books on Kindle. It's a great way to scroll through the book list, and also see if something's on sale.
Ahhhh yes, I see how that could become a problem! I keep a TBR list on an app called The StoryGraph. No urge to buy there and it gives you great data on your reading! Might be worth checking out if you want to watch the book budget. 😂
Great tips! My library helps me read more, not just by providing books in all kinds of formats, but by giving me a deadline for a few books. If I know that a particular book is not renewable and I will be at the end of the line (again!) for borrowing, I tend to bump that book to the top of my reading list and stay motivated to read it!
Finding people who have similar tastes to my own reading helps, too. There are a handful of people who are great tastemakers for me--both my own friends but a few writers/podcasters whose recommendations I trust. Librarians or booksellers are other good people who can be great in this area. This is a good time of year to check out people's best of lists to see if there is anyone who aligns with you.
Happy reading! I'm reading Challenger by Adam Higginbotham this week.
Wow, these are great tips, Tiffany! I totally agree that librarians and booksellers can give such good recommendations. If you can give them an idea of books you've enjoyed in the past, they can expertly point you in the direction of your next favourite read!
And that's such a great point about library holds and renewals. I've definitely found myself picking up the pace with my reading if I know I won't be able to renew something.
I love all these tips! Although I am 100% guilty of trying to force myself to finish books I start, even if I hate them. ðŸ˜

It would definitely be nice to see from a glance what's on sale! That would be handy for the book budget. 😂
It's a double-edged sword. Every day I'm like "Do I really need a 9th book about productivity just because it's 1.99?"

I probably need something not tied to my credit card 😂
