Welcome to Notes from a Kindred Spirit
Notes from a Kindred Spirit, a bi-weekly newsletter about embracing curiosity, exploring hobbies, living with chronic illness, and finding contentment in the everyday.
Hi there!
Welcome to my virtual reading nook! I’m so glad you’re here.
Now, you may be wondering…
Who’s writing this thing?
I’m Cassandra, a collector of hobbies and a lifelong bookworm. I was born and raised in the Canadian prairies, but now call the west coast home with my husband and our dog, Chewie (yes, like Chewbacca 🐾).
As a kid, I had my nose in a book so much that I would often be found reading a paperback while brushing my teeth. Now, that’s dedication! I am a member of 2 book clubs and the leader of a third.
When I’m not reading I’m usually dabbling in other hobbies like bullet journaling, needle felting, baking, puzzling and more!

Why Substack?
Great question! I don’t know if I have a succinct answer for that - yet.
I’ve posted my writing online on and off since I was in my early twenties, but was never really able to find a format or platform that stuck. I am endlessly curious and like to experiment with new things, so I decided to give this a go!
My writing will likely be for you if you love hobbies, especially reading. Or, if you are a bit hobby-less and would like to read about my hobby adventures and try some for yourself.
I am often asked about my hobbies, how I get started, what I’ve learned, and for recommendations for everything from books to bullet journal supplies to gift ideas. And it turns out, I love to share about all of these things! So, here I am - sharing.
I also plan to share a bit about my life with chronic illness (Cystic Fibrosis, specifically), so if you’re a fellow spoonie or just curious, welcome!
What you’ll find in Notes from a Kindred Spirit
Tips to improve your reading life, advice on starting or improving your book club, book reviews, reports on my latest hobby explorations, a collection of random miscellany (aptly titled “Random Sh*t and Whatnot” 😂), and reflections on life with chronic illness.
By subscribing (it’s free!), all new posts will come directly to your inbox. You can also read them on the website or the Substack app. You can find all of my past posts here.
“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”
- L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
A token of my appreciation
I’ve created a free download called “Enrich Your TBR with Diverse Voices” to say thank you and welcome you into the Kindred Spirits community! It’s a curated list of book recommendations with chronic illness and disability representation to help you add some diversity to your reading. Pairs perfectly with your favourite cup of tea. 😊 Just subscribe (it’s free!) below and the download link will come straight to your inbox.
Hi Cassandra, so happy to have found your substance! I did subscribe so I wouldn't miss any new posts but haven't received the end of year reading review. Any tips?
